Questions & Answers
How is the Light-Pro prosthesis unique?
The Light-Pro prosthesis is clearly a custom made prosthesis. Most prosthesis, if not all, are an assemblage of pre-fabricated components, such as pipes, foot-bolts and socket adapters. The Light-Pro is designed as a one-piece copolymer prosthesis from the socket to the foot base. The shank is custom tailored and engineered to meet the patient's profile of height, weight and activity level. This customization provides the patient with the lightest, most dynamic prosthesis.
I am very active, I enjoy sports, running, bicycling, etc. Is the
Light-Pro conducive to this type of activity?
Absolutely. Some of our most positive feedback to the Light-Pro comes from patients who engage in moderate to high level activities. Many of their comments center on the benefits of a lighter artificial limb in terms of improved performance and increased stamina.
How much does the prosthesis weigh?
The Light-Pro below the knee prosthesis weighs between 1-1/4 and 2-1/4 pounds, depending on your height, weight and activity level. The Light-Pro above the knee prosthesis weighs between 4-3/4 and 5-3/4 lbs.
Is the prosthesis too light- will it cause my leg to weaken?
No. Our experience has shown that a lighter prosthesis requires less
energy expenditure during walking, running and other activities.
Therefore, the wearer has the opportunity to improve their overall
physical health by being able to engage the "whole body" in more
activities at a longer duration.
What other advantages does the light-weight prosthesis offer?
A lighter prosthesis reduces the shear forces and pistoning motion about
the residual limb/stump. The reduction of weight results in a more comfortable
fitting prosthesis. In addition, the reduction of weight eliminates the
need for auxiliary suspension straps and waist belts.
Can the Light-Pro be adjusted once it is completed (i.e. toe direction,
flexion attitude etc..)?
Yes. The Light-Pro is designed such that both alignment changes as well
as socket fit changes can be made once the prosthesis is completed.
Do "real hot" temperatures affect the Light-Pro prosthesis?
No. In fabricating the prosthesis, the plastic is heated to 450 degrees
for it to become pliable for molding. Naturally, at this temperature,
no environmental condition/location can create this temperature.
Will I be able to change shoes?
Yes. The prosthesis is aligned to allow a 3/4" variation in heel heights
between shoes. It is easy to change between a sneaker and a dress
shoe.
How is the prosthesis suspended?
The Light-Pro prosthesis can be fabricated to include any suspension systems-
including suspension sleeves, and 100% suction system/sleeves.
How can I obtain more information?
